Gas leaks and carbon monoxide

What to do if you smell gas, and how to protect against carbon monoxide.

If you smell gas

  • Do not use switches, flames or anything that could spark.
  • Open doors and windows, turn off the gas at the meter if you can, and get out.
  • From outside, call 0800 111 999 (Great Britain) or 0800 002 001 (Northern Ireland).
  • Do not go back in until you are told it is safe.

Carbon monoxide

  • You cannot see or smell it. Fit an alarm in every room with a fuel-burning appliance and test it monthly.
  • Have boilers and fires serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease when you leave home can be a sign. Get everyone outside and call 999 if anyone is unwell.
